A striking, full-block, Neo-Gothic fortress planted on New York's architecturally staid Upper East Side, the Seventh Regiment Armory (sometimes known as the Park Avenue Armory) is now a multi-purpose public facility and event space. As New York's most famous standing armory, the Seventh Regiment building is often erroneously described as the site of the Armory Show of 1913, which brought Modernist art to America for the first time--that show was held at the 69th Regiment Armory, on Lexington Avenue. The Seventh Regiment structure is the only armory to have been built with private funds, as the regiment it housed drew heavily from the wealthy nineteenth century elite (and became known as the Silk Stocking regiment as a result).
