Founded in 1892, this is the oldest still-operating bathhouse in New York City. You can find more modern, more discriminating baths in behind Brooklyn's Iron Curtain in Brighton Beach, but, why would you want to? The gritty nineteenth century atmosphere is what you're after, and this bathhouse has it in spades: a Russian sauna, Swedish and Turkish steam rooms, a sun deck and an icy pool, staffed and patronized by the most colorful collection of characters you'll find this side of the Russian mafia. The bathhouse offers both co-ed and single-sex hours, instruction for the uninitiated, and a sauna experience par excellence. For after your schvitz, a restaurant just as thick with atmosphere inside the bathhouse serves classic Russian dishes, sought-after seltzer and New York bagels.
