The New Museum is New York's only museum committed exclusively to promoting the work of contemporary, avant-guard, and often emerging artists. Opened in 1977 by Marcia Tucker, who had previously served as the painting and sculpture curator at The Whitney Museum of American Art. The New Museum acquired its current, much larger, facility at 235 Bowery in 2007. The structure was co-designed by the Tokyo-based Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA and the local firm, Gensier. The year after it was built Conde Nast Traveler named the building one of seven architectural wonders and it remains a symbol of the neighborhood's rapid transformation. The public art piece on its facade is a pun in tribute to its location: say "hell, yes" ten times fast.
