Located in a peculiar, squat building that once was home to servants working the Astor residences about ten blocks uptown (the two buildings were apparently connected by an elaborate tunnel system), and, more recently, a store for tombstones, the Mercury Lounge has garnered rave reviews since opening, remodeled as a rock club, in 1994. The Merc is comfortable, sophisticated, well-recommended, and affordable. No matter who's playing -- and the venue attracts acts big and small -- the place always sounds great
