Now the dance mecca of Manhattan, the neo-Moorish New York City Center was built in 1923 as an assembly hall for an obscure society, obscurely named, The Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. The City protected the peculiar architectural landmark after ownership reverted, footing the bill for a 1943 renovation that transformed what had been an opulent home for a secret society into a baroque performance space, not merely open to the public but positively reflective of the city's ethnic mid-century dynamism. At the first concert, mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, the diminutive civic hero, conducted the national anthem. For several decades, the theater thrived as the stage capital of New York, featuring a string of historic performances too long to list here, but with the imminent construction of Lincoln Center at nearby Lincoln Square, New York City Center seemed doomed for demolition, another casualty of reckless Robert Moses urban planning. Thankfully, salvation came in a renewed, and unprecedented commitment to dance theater. Since the seventies, the City Center has had no real rival and annually hosts an all-star lineup of the world's most respectable dance companies.
