The building was purchased by Wood in 1972, for a mere $2,000. Wood envisioned the building as a 100 foot structure, towering over its neighbor buildings, with added floors and rooms. However, Wood’s plans were met with resistance by the NYC Department of Buildings. After a fire in October of 2006, the DOB rendered the Broken Angel House dangerous and ordered the immediate removal of its inhabitants. Wood and his family, however, refused to vacate their home, and were arrested. In 2007, Wood partnered with other prominent architectures with the goal of renovating the Broken Angel House, turning it into a condominium with space for artists to work.
