When Bob Dylan moved to New York in 1961, he took a tiny apartment above the Spaghetti shop at 161 West Fourth Street. The slim brick townhouse is exactly where we like to imagine him staying. When Bob Dylan moved to New York in 1961, he took a tiny apartment above the Spaghetti shop at 161 West Fourth Street. The slim brick townhouse is exactly where we like to imagine him staying. He lived here with his girlfriend Suze Rotolo, famously known as the girl on the cover of The Freewheelin'. The apartment is immortalized in the song "Positively Fourth Street," which Dylan wrote about his controversial transformation from folk fighter to pop star. The song describes insincere neighborhood friends of the singer who wish him well, but in fact, resent his success: "You say you lost your faith/ But that's not where it's at/ You had no faith to lose/ And you know it." What the apartment represents to Dylan in the song, and why the title is named for it, is less clear. Like the West Village itself, and specifically West Fourth Street, Dylan's bohemian status was increasingly questioned over time. Until eventually, he became a symbol of a folk tale whose authenticity people have long given up on discovering.
