The Suicide Hall
Before it was closed and the building was torn down, McGurk’s used to be the roughest and toughest bar in New York. A favorite watering hole among prostitutes and criminals, it earned the nickname “McGurk’s Suicide Hall” because many of the patrons went there to commit suicide.
Lindbergh's Ransom
The infamous villain in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial was once a carpenter who worked on the building. Allegedly, he stashed some of the ransom money in the walls of the building.
Sinatra's Fake Suicide
While Ol’ Blue Eyes was performing in New York, he briefly lived at Hampshire House with Ava Gardner, his girlfriend at the time. Jealous of Gardner’s success, Sinatra faked a suicide to get her attention. Needless to say, the ill-fated relationship did not last very long.
A Fatal Game of Poker
Arnold Rothstein was the chief of New York organized crime and the toughest Jew in town. For some reason, one night he failed to pay a poker debt. This decision proved fatal as he was gunned down in his room.
