The Samurai Knife Sharpener

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, between the hours of 12:00 Noon and 6:00 PM, outside of the Bowery Kitchen Supplies Store, Margery Cohen does her best John Belushi imitation. Cohen, who previously worked in the fish business in New Jersey and San Francisco, has moved to Manhattan and perfected the trade of Samurai knife sharpening. An experienced Japanese-American woodworker taught her the art of sharpening blades with a diamond stone. She was his apprentice, but now the pupil has become the master and she has taken over the business. Cohen typically charges between $2 and $5 per blade depending on the size of the knife. If you are having the in-laws over for Thanksgiving dinner and realize that your blades are dull (in other words, a Samurai knife sharpening emergency), you can contact Margery directly at (212) 942-5228 or margery@ix.net.com.

Strange Days

If you are a die-hard Doors fan, than this activity is for you. If not, it is probably a waste of your time. In order to recreate the iconic Strange Days album cover, you must gather a group of seven people. One person must act as the camera holder while the other six get into position. One guy needs to shave his head bald and dress in weird zebra skin shorts and lift something over his head. Four men need to dress as mimes, with one lifting the other horizontally in the air while another juggles and yet another just stands there. The icing on the cake is getting a child or small man to dress in a blazer and top hat and stand in front. However, you will need access to Sniffen Court, which is closed to the public. So, hopefully you know someone who lives there.

Alice’s Antiques of Soho

Occupying much of the ground floor of The King of Greene Street, this antique shop is one of the best in Soho. The store has been a Soho staple for many years and specializes in selling cast iron beds, which blends in very nicely with the cast iron architecture of Greene Street.

Café Sabarsky

After drowning yourself in a sea of Klee, it is a great idea to unwind at Café Sabarksy, located inside the Neue Galierie. Café Sabarksy draws its inspiration from the great Viennese Cafes that served as intellectual melting pots at the turn of the 20th century. The café was founded by Neue Galerie founder Serge Sabarsky and is operated by Kurt Gutenbrunner, the chef and owner of the trendy Viennese meatpacking haunt Wallse. The café is decorated with objects to fit the period, and features classical music and cabaret on some nights.
