Sailor's Snug Harbor
Sailor’s Snug Harbor was founded on Staten Island in 1808 by Captain Robert Richard Randall. At the time of its opening, in 1833, Sailor’s Snug was the only home exclusively for retired merchant seamen in the entire U.S. By 1900 it housed approximately 1,000 retired sailors. However, in 1976, New York City bought the land, and all remaining habitants of Sailor’s Snug were moved to North Carolina. Later that same year, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center was officially opened to the public. These days, the center’s attractions include the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the John A. Noble Maritime Collection, the Staten Island Botanic Garden, and the Staten Island Children's Museum. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center is the most visited tourist site on Staten Island.
