Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace
A life-size diorama, the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site, on Gramercy's East 20th Street, is a recreation of the childhood home of the man who became America's 26th president. (The original structure burnt down in 1916, but the house was rebuilt in 1923 and refurnished with original pieces donated by TR's widow.) Now a museum and a protected national historic site dedicated to Teddy's, the house features five period rooms, a library and a gift shop. For its painstaking attention to historical detail, the site rivals the Lower East Side Tenement Museum as a diorama treatment of history, a reminder of how the first half lived.
