New York County Supreme Court
The New York County Supreme Court is probably the most impressive edifice on Foley Square, the closest New York comes to Washington, D.C.'s flair for building thrilling neoclassical monuments that function as municipal organs in streetscapes swept clean of all but bureaucratic life -- and a setting familiar to even the most casual Law & Order fan. Inside, things are not quite so rosy, as litigators wrestle over increments of civic power. The building's facade is inscribed with a phrase taken from George Washington, earnest aphorist: "The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government."
I had the displeasure of covering the Tyco trial. Yet, I had the pleasure of sitting next to the courtroom sketch artist who drew an image that forced a mistrial.
