In 1954, a group of three intrepid entrepreneurs endeavored to open one of the most famous and unique bohemian coffee houses in America. Jose Limon, Calvin Holt, and Stephen Bruce called themselves the Serendipity 3 and pooled their vast collective fortunes of $300 to purchase a run down basement space in a tenement building on the East Side of Manhattan. Before long the small boite garnered a small following among the bohemian community of New York City. A young artist named Andy Warhol became a regular. Serendipity became known for its eccentric frozen drinks including the patented frozen hot chocolate among other tasty items. Today Serendipity 3 remains a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Young children like it because of its odd décor and large burgers. Adults like it because it brings them back to a different time when people could find the pleasantly unexpected merely by chance.
