IBM Building

The IBM Building was built in 1983 to accommodate the New York offices of International Business Machines Corp. This gargantuan midtown behemoth was designed by renowned architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. The modernist building is distinguished by its interesting cantilevered entrance on the corner of Madison Avenue. The entrance leads into a grand central atrium that showcases an excellent collection of public art and a large collection of bamboo trees. When current owner Edward J. Minskoff purchased the building from IBM, he reduced the amount of bamboo in the atrium, but he sustained the building’s commitment to public art. The building’s atrium frequently showcases different sculptures and other interesting artworks.

One winter night standing outside of the IBM Building, I figured out the meaning of art. Seriously.
