White Horse Tavern
A landmark West Village watering hole, the White Horse Tavern is most famous -- and justifiably so -- as the site of the final demise of the self-destructive poet Dylan Thomas. (After his nineteenth whiskey, he is said to have announced, "That, I believe, is the record," and promptly expired). Built in 1880, the pub retains some of its old city charms, but its fifteen minutes of literary fame are what keep it alive--the food isn't worth mentioning, the decor unexceptional, and the crowd remarkably preppie and yuppie, considering the location and reputation.
Famous poet Dylan Thomas enjoyed visiting the White Horse Tavern because it reminded him so much of his native Wales. He also loved the alcohol there. A lot.
