Founded as a speakeasy during Prohibition, Chumley's is another of New York's storied saloons that run on reputations built in earlier eras, a cozy West Village watering hole that represents, in that distinctive New York way, a mixture of the literary, the political, the blue-collar and the alcoholic. The bar features working fireplaces, worn wooden benches, a great selection of beer, and a secret second entrance off Barrow Street, whereby even the most uptight patron can feel a bit like lawbreaker again.
