Chumley's Overview

Founded as a speakeasy during Prohibition, Chumley's is another of New York's storied saloons that run on reputations built in earlier eras, a cozy West Village watering hole that represents, in that distinctive New York way, a mixture of the literary, the political, the blue-collar and the alcoholic. The bar features working fireplaces, worn wooden benches, a great selection of beer, and a secret second entrance off Barrow Street, whereby even the most uptight patron can feel a bit like lawbreaker again.

The address of the secret entrance to Chumley’s, at 86 Barrow Street, is perhaps the origin for the term “86”. It was apparently a code word at the speakeasy for when the bar was getting raided and the staff had to stop serving liquor. The staff would send all the patrons out the back door to avoid the raids. Nowadays, when someone is “86’d” from a bar, they are cut off from alcohol supply.
