Jewelry District
They're not the city's most glamorous jewelry stores (those, like Tiffany and Harry Winston, run along Fifth Avenue in midtown), but the warehouse-style diamond vendors that pack the West Forties are a literal goldmine for bargain hunters and their fellow-travelers. Reportedly, more than 90% of the diamonds sold in the United States pass through these distributors, which means there is always plenty of supply. The largely Hassidic Jewish vendors and dingy, run-down surroundings are nice counterparts to the super-luxurious products on display.
