Doughnut Plant
A recent, gourmet addition to an otherwise traditional (if anomalous) strip mall offering decidedly lowbrow fare, the Doughnut Plant promises the best doughnuts in New York City--and certainly delivers the richest, thickest, chewiest, and heaviest deserts on Grand Street. The doughnuts aren't available only here -- plenty of upscale markets around the city have swooned for them, and begun offering slightly staler, marked-up versions far from Grand Street -- but this is, by far, the most desirable outlet. Though the Plant advertises more than 35 flavors, on a typical day they bake and stock about a half dozen, generally featuring several mainstays alongside some more experimental flavors. The doughnuts are closer to a square with a hole cut in them than the round model perfected by Krispy Kreme, and much, much heavier--all you need for breakfast.
