Although the Rathskeller is no more, fear not Bostonians and travelers, for there is a venue that has picked up the slack in The Rat’s absence. This club is known as the Middle East Club.

Opened in 1974 as a Lebanese Restaurant, the owners, the Sater Family, have expanded the original restaurant to encompass the street corner in which it sits. Today there are four attractions inside the complex. The Downstairs at the Middle East is responsible for picking up the slack in the rock venue circuit of Boston.

Many famous bands have rolled through the halls of this establishment. Some of the bands that assault the walls of the venue with their sonic assault are but not limited to, Sonic Youth, The Flaming Lips, The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Cake just to name a few. Not only has the Middle East Club been a venue to some of the hottest bands in the mainstream and indie circuits but it has also been immortalized in recordings of some of the bands that have played there including the Boston natives of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
Now the club doesn’t just cater to rock musicians any more but hip-hop artists who are also on the indie circuit. For three years running the venue has been voted one of the best hip-hop venues in the city.

No matter the mood, the Middle East Club is the place to be when enjoying the nightlife that Boston has to offer. Come see history in the making.
