The Custom House was originally built in 1837 with the purpose to control and register cargo on the docks that used to extend to the east of the building. The original building was a domed structure combining Roman and Greek Architecture. By the early 20th century the shipping business in Boston outgrew the tiny Custom House, and an expansion was required. Since the federal government owned the building and the land the height restrictions on towers didn’t hold them back from creating the tallest tower in Boston at the time.

The Tower itself was built around the original Custom House, which now serves as the buildings lobby. Not only was it the tallest building in Boston at the time, but also when the clock was installed, it was the largest clock ever made. It served the federal government until 1986 when it was abandoned.

The government moved their operations over to the Thomas P. O’Neil Building and the city of Boston bought the Custom House Tower. For 14 years the building remained unused and closed off to the public.

It wasn’t until 1995 that the building was bought to be converted into what it is today, the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Boston. The plaza out in the front of the building also provides a scenic walkway to Faneuli Hall and the Marketplace Center.
