The Citgo Sign

Containing over five miles of neon tubes at its creation in 1940, the CITGO sign stands tall in Kenmore Square. The 60ft by 60ft square sign has been an orientation point for Bostonians since the 40s. It remained lit up until 1979, when in reaction to the energy crisis; CITGO shut the sign down for four years. In 1983 the company wanted to dismantle the sign but local activist groups seeking to preserve the sign as a city landmark blocked the operation. The sign sticks up above the left field side of Fenway Ball Park. It resides on post cards, books, movies, and can also be seen Beth Israel hospital. The activists sought to add the sign to the city’s already hefty list of landmarks such as The Paul Revere House and the Custom House. So CITGO let the sign remain, and agreed to maintain it for three more years. Today the sign still stands but instead of standing over top of the old Cities Service Divisional Office (CITGO’s original name), it now stands atop the Boston University Bookstore. The sign itself was remodeled a few years back and now the neon tubes no longer adorn the sign, but have been replaced with LED’s that are brighter and more efficient. It still stands there today serving as a landmark for all Bostonians and lost travelers.
