McKinney Falls, named after an early Texas pioneer who eventually settled here, is a wonderful natural get-away on 744.4-acres just minutes from downtown Austin. It's very close to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. From U.S. 183 South, take the Scenic Loop Rd. west to the park entrance.

The park is located at the confluence of Onion and Williamson Creeks and has an information center, hiking trails and camping facilities. Various structures can be reserved and rented for a small fee such as the amphitheater (capacity of 50) and group dining hall (capacity 75). There are two areas with waterfalls and swimming, a hike and bike trail that leads visitors through an ancient Indian cliff cave, and an expanse of ground made of water-worn exposed limestone where imaginative visitors pretend that they are walking on the moon. Bicycles are welcome.

Camping facilities: Screened shelters with beds, campsites with electric (30 amp) and water hook ups, and walk-in (100-200 yards) tent campsites. Rates range from $8-$35 per night. A youth group camping area is also available.

If you have swimming in mind, call 512/243-1643 for current creek conditions.
