In 1991, local artist Heloise Gold and a handful of visionary folks imagined a new program that would aid the homeless of Austin. They formed an organization and got it funded as a cultural contract with the City of Austin.

They believed in the power of art.

The program, called Art From the Streets, happens all year long. Twice each week a team of artists come to ARCH (the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless) to give art classes. They lovingly engage the homeless patrons with art materials, new skills and kind encouragement. Something wonderful happens. Interesting works of art are born.

Then, once a year, the general public has a chance to experience the passion, camaraderie, and general esprit de corps of Art From the Streets.

For one weekend each November, it's time for the annual art show and sale! It's a grand weekend. It's what they work for all year long. The success of this annual art sale helps Austin's homeless get a leg up in the world.
